Of Water and Cheese — Confiserie Tschirren
On Kramgasse I passed by the Confiserie Tschirren before reaching the Albert Einstein Haus. The window display left such an indelible impression that I decided to go back for a visit. Just anything that I could afford from the bakery.
Well, a cursory glance at the storefront would tell anyone that things were not cheap there. That was the reason why I decided against it the first time I passed by. I am sure readers have heard of the advice for women: if you see something you really want, do not buy yet. Wait for a couple days. If you still want it after, go back and get it. Surely, those pastries were screaming out at me even as I was learning about Einstein’s life.
I think the picture above shows enough of the enticement. No matter how frugal, I could afford a little pastry – I reasoned myself into buying something. I opted for a cream cheese and onion roll. It was lunch hour, but there was nothing cheap in that quieter part of town. The cream cheese roll would have to do for me until I find a cheap eat.
4 CHF for a little cream cheese roll, and it did power me for the next expedition. Yummy, and expensive it was.
The Confiserie Tschirren has had more than a century’s expertise in making truffles and chocolates. There was just about this much on the company’s website. It seemed to me though that it has developed expertise in making pastries as well. Some reviews went as far as saying that the Confiserie is “one of the reasons to visit Switzerland.”
The cream cheese roll was quite good, with a sprinkle of rock salt giving it a savory punch. The salt left a strong impression.
And with that, I went ahead to my next site.
