The Tai Po Waterfront Park

The Tai Po Waterfront Park

From picnicking to jogging, from playing street music to bicycling, there is something for everyone at the Tai Po Waterfront Park.  Wedged between the Tai Po Industrial Estate and Fu Shin Estate, the park prides in its open space of twenty-acres with thirty points of interest.

Options for activities within the park are endless.  The jogging track and the viewing terrace are the two main facilities that serve my purposes.  The promenade is about 2km in distance and it is perfect for an easy stroll.  The path presents a close encounter with the Tolo Harbor and its sea-reliant creatures.  Cranes and see gulls are common views.  With an occasional boat the scenery could be near-poetic.  Surely, people jog and bicycle as well, and the biking trail connects to the Tolo Harbor biking trail, which in turn leads one to bike all the way to Shatin.

At the viewing terrace, there is ample space for stretching.  In this public space people do all sorts of interesting things, including playing the Chinese instrument erhu, the violin and I am sure I have heard the saxophone there as well.

The park and its beautifully manicured space attracts large throngs.  There are many people anytime of the day and any season of the year.  During a sunny weekend, people pack themselves in the garden for all sorts of fun activities, be it picnicking, throwing Frisbee, or simply reading.  The garden’s large green pasture with many banyan trees within makes it a prime venue for families with children.

At the end of the promenade one will find a few public housing estates.  An easy itinerary would be simply to walk from the Tai Po Industrial Estate end to the public housing estates to have a meal at the restaurants there.

How to Get There:

There is metered parking on Dai King Street, which is within the Tai Po Industrial Estate.  Bus line 72A runs between Tai Po Industrial Estate and Tai Wai Station.  There are also bus and minibus options from Tai Po Market Station.  But they may stop only on Ting Kok Road.  The closest stop would be the Fire Station.  They do not stop within the Industrial Estate and therefore require extra walking.
